Jharkhand, which means 'Land of Forest', is a state located in the eastern part of India. For a long time, Jharkhand remained as the southern part of state of Bihar but was carved out into a separate state by Bihar Reorganization Act passed by the parliament in the year 2000. Jharkhand state formally came into existence on November 15, 2000 which is the birth anniversary date of legendary Bhagwan Birsa Munda.

Jharkhand is bounded by West Bengal in the east, Uttar Pradesh in the northwest, Chhattisgarh in the west, Bihar in the north and Odisha in the south.
