Bihar is a state located in the eastern part of India. Earlier during the British era, Bihar was a part of Presidency of Bengal. On March 22, 1912 Bihar and Orissa, with Patna as the capital, separated into a single separate province from the Bengal Presidency. Later, it was partitioned into separate Bihar and Orissa Provinces on April 1, 1936 under under the Government of India Act of 1935. Later, Manbhum district in south-east Bihar was partitiioned into Purulia and Dhanbad districts, and Purulia was merged into West Bengal as a part of Linguistic Reorganization of Indian States in 1956. Dhanbad remained a part of Bihar (now Jharkhand).

Bihar is bounded by West Bengal in the east, Uttar Pradesh in the west, Nepal in the north and Jharkhand in the south. Jharkhand was separated from Bihar on November 15, 2000.
