Narayana Murthy, Nilekani, Premji To Mentor Students Set Up Companies

IISc Bangalore Alumni Association has come up with a brilliant idea of ‘Mentoring System’. As per reports, this system will take the services of eminent entrepreneurs like Narayana Murthy, Nilekani, Premji and others from across the globe who will mentor the students of IISc and IITs willing to set up small companies. The mentors and the students will initially interact through a web site and when the mentor’s profile and expertise matches with student’s plan, they will get into live interaction. Mentors will take time out of their schedules and be in personal touch with the student. If the system becomes a success, it will be extended to other engineering colleges.

BIT Sindri has set up Small Industries Research and Development Organization (SIRTDO) within its campus where unemployed engineers can start and incubate their ventures under the guidance of a BIT faculty. When successful, the entrepreneur can move out of SIRTDO and run the venture independently. However, I am not sure if any student of BIT has ever worked on any start-up in SIRTDO.

The mentoring system envisaged by IISc Alumni Association deserves serious consideration by BIT Sindri and SIRTDO. In the present scenario, it will be a great help to BIT students who wish to take to the entrepreneural path for their career. BIT Sindri has very capable and eminent alumni who can mentor the students. In addition, successful non-alumni entrepreneurs can also participate in the mentoring system. May be SIRTDO will need some modifications in their bye-laws.
